Who is HEART?

Heart Counselling is a team of mental health professionals, passionate about supporting people in their time of need

In Level 2, some services are available in person but most continue to be delivered remotely. Although Level 1 means services can be offered in-person, some of our Providers will be offering remote only – please check with your therapist when you book your next session. Please email admin@heartcounseling.org for further information.

Where it  all  began

At HEART Counselling, we are committed to meeting you where you are and to walking alongside you, as you tap into the wisdom that lies within you. We will help you find the skills, strength and compassion that will lead to healing and enable you to live free from patterns that no longer serve positively.
We believe and trust that you have the resources to overcome challenges, that patterns can be changed, and trauma can be healed. This means that we can live a more joyful and peaceful life, in greater harmony with ourselves and others.

Selena fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a counsellor after a career in financial management, inspired by her own recovery from trauma, a terminal cancer diagnosis and a marriage marred in physical and emotional abuse. “I know first-hand that, against the odds, amid inter-generational trauma, it is possible to overcome the situations we find ourselves in and change patterns to live more of the life we long for.”

Selena is mum to five, and also Granmama to five.

After completing a Bachelor of Applied Social Science in Counselling, Selena founded HEART Counselling in 2014 and is its lead therapist. Her vision was to create an agency that would contribute to the healing of the whole family through supporting all generations on their journeys. Selena has a particular passion for supporting women to recover from the trauma of abuse so that they can live with greater freedom.

Speaking of family, Selena’s eldest child, Stacey, is HEART Counselling Practice Manager – she is responsible for the day-to-day administration duties, including triage of referrals, client liaison, calendar management for the team, and invoicing.

Many of the therapists at HEART, completed their studies with Selena. This has made for a cohesive team providing a warm welcoming environment. Today, Selena is well on her way to making her vision a reality.

With a background in financial management and international contract negotiation, Selena used her networking skills and business acumen to secure several funding contracts. Our current contracts include:

  • Pinnacle Midland Health Network
  • Hauraki PHO
  • National Hauora Coalition
  • Instep EAP Services
  • Workplace Support Services
  • OCP EAP Services

In October 2019, HEART Counselling was successful in their bid for an ACC Sensitive Claims Supplier contract. This means that clients presenting under other funding contracts, who are then identified as eligible for ACC, can have the same continuity of service. HEART can look after the whole process from lodging the claim, to the assessment and treatment work.

The ACC work is a substantial piece of work – the demand on services is significant and so HEART are always looking for new Providers to fill the roles of

  • Counsellors
  • Psychotherapists
  • Social Workers
  • Clinical Psychologists

Being a survivor of depression myself, I've experienced first hand the importance in having the right person to talk to. I believe wholeheartedly in the benefits of discussing in depth our experiences of life, the things that make us who we are, the troubles we face, our visions for the future and the goals we want to achieve.
